Please respect the school's facilities and equipment. The gym floor is
state of the art and they are extremely protective of
it. Do NOT PUT DOWN any tape, liquids or marks of any kind. Please wear soft
rubber/gel soled court-shoes (not the black ones or road running shoes) to
prevent marking or scuffing up the floor. The knee pads should be the soft cloth
ones, NOT ones for rollerblading/ skateboarding/ biking.
Participants must accept referees' decisions with sportsmanlike conduct, without disputing them. In case of doubt, clarification may be requested only through the captain. Participants must behave respectfully and courteously in the spirit of fair play, not only toward the referees, but also toward opponents, and teammates.
MISCONDUCT AND SANCTIONS: Minor misconduct offenses are not subject to sanctions. It is the referee's duty to prevent the teams from approaching the sanctioning level by issuing a verbal or hand signal warning to a team member or to the team through the captain. This type of warning is not sanctioned and has no immediate consequences. It should not be recorded on the scoresheet.
MISCONDUCT LEADING TO SANCTIONS: Incorrect conduct by a team member toward referees, opponents, or teammates is classified in two categories according to the seriousness of the offense. Rude conduct: action contrary to good manners or moral principles, or any action expressing contempt. Offensive conduct: defamatory or insulting words or gestures.
SANCTION SCALE: According to the judgment of the referee and depending on the seriousness of the offense, the sanctions to be applied and recorded on the scoresheet are: Penalty, Expulsion or Disqualification.
PENALTY: The first rude conduct in the match by any team member is penalized with a point and service to the opponent.
EXPULSION: A team member who is sanctioned by expulsion shall not play for the rest of the set. The first offensive conduct by a team member is sanctioned by expulsion with no other consequences, the second rude conduct in the same match by the same team member is sanctioned by expulsion with no other consequences.
DISQUALIFICATION: A team member who is sanctioned by disqualification must leave the facility for the rest of the match with no other consequences. The second offensive conduct in the same match by the same team member is sanctioned by disqualification with no other consequences, the third rude conduct in the same match by the same team member is sanctioned by disqualification and no other consequences.
APPLICATION OF MISCONDUCT SANCTIONS: All misconduct santions are individual sanctions, remain in force for the entire match and are recorded on the scoresheet. The repetition of misconduct by the same team member in the same match is sanctioned progressively (the team member receives heavier sanction for each successive offense). Expulsion or disqualification due to offensive conduct or aggression does not require a previous sanction. MISCONDUCT BEFORE, DURING OR AFTER A MATCH FOLLOW THE SAME SANCTIONING RULES. GPVA has a zero tolerance policy for any physical attacks, or verbal threats. Any player exhibiting this type of behavior is subject to the following disciplinary action: First offense- player will be disqualified from the match and may be declared ineligible for GPVA Membership for one year starting from the date of the infraction. Second offense- Player will be disqualified from the match and may be declared ineligible for GPVA Membership for two years starting from the date of the infraction. Third offense- Player will be disqualified from the match and may be declared ineligible for the remainder of his/her lifetime. There is no "starting over" on this policy. All ineligibility decisions are made by the GPVA Executive Committee. A player may appeal this decision by requesting a meeting with the Executive Committee. It is the sole responsibility of the offending player to request this meeting. The appeal request must be made within 10 days of the ineligibility decision. The result of the appeal meeting is final, no further appeals may be made.

Cabinet and Ball Cart
Teams are responsible for locking the closet and ball cart at the end of each night. Any team not doing so will forfeit the games for that night. If we cannot determine which team was the last one to leave, then all 4 teams will forfeit their games for the night. In addition, those teams will be responsible for replacing any balls that may be missing as a result.

Matches and Scoring
Rally scoring. Due to time constraints, the sets will end at 25, win by 2, cap at 29. Regular season matches consist of 4 sets. Playoff matches are as follows: Wildcard match - best of 3 sets. If the 3rd set is necessary it is a set to 15 switch sides at 7. Semi-final and final matches - best of 5 sets. If the 5th set is necessary, the set is played to 15 win by 2, no cap, switch sides at 7. Top 6 teams go on to the playoffs. Tie-breaks are determined by head-to-head records, least points against and most points for. Standings reflect tie-breaks and are updated weekly.
Teams
Each team may have up to 15 players on their roster. When the match starts a team must have at least 2 players. At the start of second set, the team must field at least 4 players. A player may not play for more than one team during a season. Every player on a playoff team must have played at least 50% of the matches. Player attendance is tracked every week. Exceptions may be made on a case by case basis. Captains are responsible for marking the score sheet for the players that are present. Once the match is completed and the score sheets signed, the results are final. There will be no changes. NO EXCEPTIONS!! Each player on a team is required to sign an electronic waiver on the GPVA website. This waiver covers insurance and code of conduct. In order for a player to appear on the scoresheet, they must have completed a waiver PRIOR to playing. Captains are responsible for making sure that any subs and new players are added to their roster and have completed the waiver prior to playing. You cannot add a player to a roster unless they have completed the waiver. All captains are responsible for updating their roster on the website. Commissioners are no long updating rosters. There are no more "write ons" allowed to the scoresheet
Paid Referees
Each team must pay the referee $20 prior to the beginning of the match. If for any reason you forfeit a match, you must pay the ref the entire $40. This is due no later then the following week's match. At the time of play offs, you pay $20 for each match that you play. For example, if you are in the wild card match, you pay the referee $20. If you make it to the semi-final match, you pay the referee $20. If you make it to the final match, you pay $20.
Libero
The use of a Libero is allowed. The Libero player must wear a contrasting color when using team uniforms. Otherwise, it must wear one of the provided libero vests. The Libero is: Allowed to replace any player in a back-row position. Not allowed to complete an attack hit if at the moment of the contact, the ball is entirely higher than the top of the net. May not serve, block or attempt to block. A player may not complete an attack hit from higher than the top of the net, if the ball is coming from an overhand finger pass by a Libero inside the 10 foot line. Replacements involving the Libero are not counted as regular substitutions. They are unlimited, but there must be a rally between two Libero replacements. The Libero can only be replaced by the player whom he/she replaced.
Ghost Rule
The Ghost Rule is Active as follows: 5 Players = No Ghost (3 players in front row, 2 players in back row) 4 Players = 1 Ghost 3 Players = 2 Ghosts 2 Players = 3 Ghosts A "ghost" takes the place of a missing player. The ghost will take a position in the rotation as a normal player would. When it is the time for the ghost to serve, it is an automatic side out, the other team earns a point and the serve. Substitutions are the same as if the ghosts were real people. For example, on a team that has 2 ghosts and 1 is in the front row, and the other is in the back, and someone comes in late to sub for the ghost in the front row. After a few rotations, the ghost is now in the front row and another person arrives. This first sub cannot go in for the remaining ghost, the new person has to go into the front row.
Rally Scoring
Due to time constraints, the sets will end at 25, win by 2, cap at 29. Regular season matches consist of 4 sets. Playoffs are best of 5 sets. Tie-breaker set is a regular set. Top 6 teams go on to the playoffs. Tie-breaks are determined by: 1) winning percentage, 2) head-to-head & 3) percentage of total points won. Standings reflect tie-breaks and are updated weekly. In regard to the late matches and PDS staff: matches must begin on time. Every 15 minute delay will result in a forfeit of that set. In fairness to the players of the 2nd match, the 1st match will end by 8:30. All players must be out of the gym by 10:30
Forfeits
When the match starts a team must have at least 2 players, of which 1 must be a woman. At the start of second game, the team must field at least 4 players, of which 1 must be a woman. Any missing player will be substituted with a ghost player. Matches will start promptly at the starting time. If a team cannot field a valid team at the start of the match, then a 10 minute grace period will be given before game 1 will be forfeit. The team will have 5 more minutes to field a valid team before game 2 is forfeit. After that, the team has 15 minutes to field a valid team before game 3 is forfeit. Finally, the team has 15 more minutes to field a team before game 4 is forfeit. For example, start time is 7 PM * if at 7:10 PM there isn't a valid team, then Game 1 is forfeit. * if at 7:15 PM there isn't a valid team, then Game 2 is forfeit. * if at 7:30 PM there isn't a valid team, then Game 3 is forfeit. * if at 7:45 PM there isn't a valid team, then Game 4 is forfeit. Exceptions will be made for weather and road conditions. A team that forfeits more then 8 sets in a season will automatically forfite its reserved spot in the leauge for the following season. In the event of a forfeit, you must contact the comissioner no later than 6:00pm on the day of the match so that all other parties may be notified in ample time. Failure to notify before 6:00pm will not only result in forfeit of the match, but an additional 2 set penalty. Any team that forfeits a match is responsible for paying the scheduled ref the TOTAL fee ($40) the following week.
Subsitutions
One for One substitution scheme. A, B, C, D, E and F are on the court. Z subs for A. Now, only Z and A cannot sub for anyone else, except for themselves. If Y subs for Z, then A, Y and Z can sub for each other, but not for anyone else on the court, so long as Y hasn't sub-ed for anyone else.
Middle Line Rule
No player can touch or cross the center line dividing the gym when both courts are in use. (This is the center court stripe for the basketball court.) This is a safety issue and there are no exceptions. On the referees decision, this rule may be overridden if there is not a game being played on the other court.
Replays
The referees cannot see everything all the time. If the referee missed a call and both sides are adamant, then replay the point.
Net Serves Are Legal
If a serve hits the net and goes over the net and lands in play without hitting any obstructions is considered a legal serve.
Score Sheets
EACH TEAM IS RESPONSIBLE FOR BRINGING ITS OWN SCORE SHEET. This will ensure that we have a score sheet every week. The sheets are made available in the schedule portion of the GPVA website. Team captains are responsible for checking score sheets for accuracy before signing them. This includes the scores, the attendance & the correct spelling of each player's name. Signed score sheets are considered final. Game penalties may be assessed to teams whose match is not finalized with a signature. The attendance on the scoresheet is not necessarily indicative of the actual attendance. Captains should refer to the website for the "official" attendance tally. Any yellow or red cards issued are to be assigned to the player in the attendance portion of the scoresheet. The type of infraction will also be recorded at the bottom. Signed score sheets are to be put into the locker at the end of the match.
Team Dues
All teams are required to submit a non-refundable deposit of $100.00 EACH SEASON to the commissioner in order to hold their team spot in the league. The non-refundable deposit will be applied to the overall league fee. The balance of the league fee must be turned in to the commissioner on the due date for the night of the week on which you play. NO EXCEPTIONS. Payment must be in the form of 1 check and should be made payable to: GPVA Only one check per team will be accepted. NO CASH!!! Please put your team name in the memo line of your check. Referee fees are the responsibility of each team and should not be included with your check for the league fee. Teams not turning in their league fee on time will not receive credit for any matches played until payment is received. LEAGUE FEES ARE NON-REFUNDABLE. Each team captain has two keys (one for the cabinet & one for the ball cart). If any keys become lost they must be reported to the commissioner and they will then be replaced at the expense of the team. Deposit is waived for the 2012 winter season.
